The Department for Regional History

is part of the Institute of History of the University of Stuttgart. Its function is to explore the significant political, economic, societal and cultural characteristics of south-western Germany within the context of German and European history.

Regional history is defined by its epoch-spanning, interdisciplinary and comparative approach. A variety of methods and the competence of linking to current discourses are inevitable requirements. In spatial terms the Department for Regional History puts its emphasis on researching and teaching the history of south-western Germany and its adjoining areas, in temporal terms it comprises anything between pre- as well as protohistory and the 20th century.

Moreover, regional history offers the possibility to acquaint students with potential occupational areas for historians of regional history. This in turn can help the students form strategic networks. In addition, regional history functions particularly as an interconnection between historical research and the public. This includes services for both federal state as well as institutions and societies working in the fields of history and culture. Thus, the Department for Regional History in Stuttgart is a cooperative partner in an information system for regional studies in Baden-Württemberg (Project LEO-BW.).
