The Soldier at the Western Front – The Use of Poisonous Gas
Source 4: Gas-Bell, an Acoustic Warning Signal

A soldier with overcoat, gloves and steal helmet rings the gas alarm bell that is positioned in the trenches fixed to wooden frame. The inscription “duck ye nut” reminds the soldiers to keep their heads down in order not to be killed by enemy snipers and to prevent to bump their heads. Gas alarm often caused panic among the soldiers, due to the fear of severe injuries and great pain – the worst was the uncertainty when faced with the unpredictable new war agent.
